I think I read somewhere once that ants act more like one life form than individuals. Then I wondered if we’d be better off like that. Those t-shirts we wore in elementary school, depicting kids dabbed in every color of the human palette holding hands around the globe. I’m thinking of a spontaneous broad-brush hegemony. Where each and every one of us perpetuate ideas singularly for the ultimate purpose. The Queen. God save her. I heard God is dead. Talk about self-fulfilling prophecy. Where are my chaos theorists at? They’re too busy tying their shoes to prevent 2012 from coming.

Instead we have words. Colloquial limitations. Gilded abstractions. And that certain intuition and drive and work ethic that gets the job done in a jiffy. One time I spilled the hardboiled eggs of my BLT cobb salad all over a fast food restaurant’s carpet and felt good for appointing jobs.

6 Yr. old Chinese Boy Lives Alone:

A six-year-old HIV carrier, has been living alone since his parents died of AIDS. The boy, known as Ah Long, does his own washing, cooking, studying and raises chickens. He lives in his parents’ house at the foothill village of Malu Mountain in Liuzhou in Guangxi Province, China. Ah Long has an 84-year-old grandmother, who visits him quite frequently and cooks for him despite not living with him. A local primary school was forced to turn down his application under pressure from parents of other children. Due to his complicated family background, the Welfare Department has declined to take care of the boy. He receives 70 yuan of subsistence allowance per month from the local civil bureau. At The Faster Times, James Yeh interviews Sam Pink re his new novel, Person.

4 prose pieces by Sam will appear in Pop Serial #2.

Sam will be reading at the second edition of EAR EATER, the new reading series curated by Cassandra Troyan, on Friday, November 19th, at 8 P.M., at Cassie and Sara Drake’s apartment in Chicago, 1622 S. Allport St. Apt. #1.

Ana C. and Kendra Grant Malone will also be reading (via Skype), as will Leif Haven and James Tadd Adcox (in the flesh!). It will be like a Pop Serial edition, because so many contributors are reading, and I believe Sara and Lyra Hill’s art will be hanging on the wall as well.

The first EAR EATER was a lot of fun—Steve Roggenbuck read, I read for the first time on my birthday, Tao Lin was there, Cody Troyan and Richard Wehrenberg Jr. read and hung out the whole time via Skype, Cassandra walked outside mid-performance and had a stranger on the street read one of her poems into a bullhorn—so definitely come check it out if you live in Chicago.

Ana is a poet and artist living in Tijuana and San Diego. She has a new book available called This is Controversial, which features poems by her with art by some of her artist friends. She also edits New Wave Vomit, which has featured work by many Pop Serial contributors.

She will be reading via Skype at the second edition of the EAR EATER reading series at mine and Sara Drake’s apartment on Friday, November 19th.
